What is All-on 4, and
How Does it Work?

Originally developed by the Portuguese dentist Paulo Malo and then adopted by implant manufacturer Nobel Biocare, the All-on-four treatment works much like any other dental implant procedure.

A single tooth dental implant requires a titanium screw to be inserted into the root of the missing tooth; then, a prosthetic tooth is attached to the crown of the implant. Titanium is widely used in most surgical applications because of its strength and break-resistant properties. It also has the incredible ability to fuse with the bone. This prevents further bone loss and atrophic jaw syndrome in certain cases.

For patients with many or all missing teeth, All-on-four attaches just four implants strategically into the jaw bone, then a full arch of teeth is attached to the implants. All-on-four is sometimes referred to as “implant supported dentures” because of the way it works.

By tilting the anterior implants at a 45-degree angle, we can fix the titanium screw implants to the existing jaw bone even in patients with significant bone loss or atrophy. This eliminates the need for costly and time-consuming bone grafts that can also have a detrimental effect on your health.

After the implants have been set, we are able, in some cases, to load your implants with a full set of temporary teeth on the day of treatment. Allowing you to go about your daily life until you are ready for your permanent teeth. Once your bones have fused with the implants and healed, we can fit you with a custom set of teeth that gives you the smile you always wanted.

In one day, our doctors are able to perform your All-on-Four treatment for both upper and lower arches. Compare this to traditional implant surgery that includes around 8 -10 implants and may take multiple procedures and many months of recovery. Not only is the minimal surgery much quicker, but the recovery takes significantly less time. In some cases, patients will be back to work in just a couple of days without the need for prescription painkillers.

Just like the actual surgery, patients who opt for All-on-4 treatment adjust to their new teeth much faster than typical dentures.

According to this study by the US National Library of Medicine, researchers have found that there is a lower case of morbidity for patients who choose All-on-4 compared to other bone grafting procedures. The survival rate of patients is 99.8% in patients who underwent the All-on-4 treatment.

Less time in surgery and no complex bone grafting procedures means All-on-4 treatment is much less expensive than other dental implant procedures for patients with severe dental problems and missing teeth. Each patient is different, and no two surgeries are alike, but typically All-on-4 treatment is anywhere from a quarter to one-half the cost of traditional implant surgery. Patients also save on costly medication required to treat typical dental implant procedures. 

The All-on-4 treatment gives patients the look and feels of having a natural set of teeth.
